The smallest member of the motmot family, the Tody Motmot loves the thick, wet ravines of the primary forest at Heliconias. At certain times of the year the forest rings with the calls of this tiny, hard-to-find bird, and this is one of the most reliable places in Costa Rica to see it.

A small, secretive toucan of mature forest, the Yellow-eared Toucanet is a highlight for many visitors to Heliconias. The hanging bridges put you at eye level with the canopy, giving you an excellent chance to watch these beautiful birds as they move through the treetops in search of fruit.

Black-eared Wood-Quail

Odontophorus melanotis

One of the most elusive birds in Costa Rica, the Black-eared Wood-Quail lives on the floor of undisturbed primary forest and is far more often heard than seen. Small coveys move quietly through the leaf litter, and their rollicking duets echo through the forest at dawn. The old-growth habitat at Heliconias makes it one of the very few places where patient birders have a real chance of an encounter with this special species.
