Visiting Agami Island

The Amazing Agami Heron

In May of 2025, one of our friends found a previously-unreported rookery of Agami Heron on his property near Katira de Guatuso, Costa Rica. This site may be one of the largest nesting sites of this rare bird in Costa Rica.

The Agami Heron is a resplendent bird: it's a wonderful mixture of blue, red, and white with an incredible flowing crest of feathers that move like liquid.

We offer excursions from Bijagua to Agami Island that include not only these amazing birds but many other interesting species found in the Caribbean lowlands: Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Nicaragua Seed-finch, and Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures are often found in that area.
