Habitat & Ecosystem

Middle-Elevation Caribbean Forest

Tapir Valley is characterized by its unique middle-elevation Caribbean slope ecosystem, where the transition between lowland and highland forests creates exceptional biodiversity. The area receives abundant rainfall from the Caribbean trade winds, supporting lush vegetation and a rich variety of bird species.

Forest Structure

The reserve features a mix of primary middle-elevation forest and regenerating secondary forest, providing diverse microhabitats. The canopy reaches heights of 20-30 meters, with a rich understory of palms, heliconias, and other plants that attract a variety of bird species. The Caribbean slope location means the forest is more humid and supports different species than Pacific slope forests.

Water Features

Water is abundant in Tapir Valley, with a year-round, spring-fed stream and a seasonal lagoon. This creates additional habitat diversity and attracts water-loving species.
