Frequently asked questions
If you don't see your question here, send us a message or call. We're happy to help you choose the right tour.
Are your tours private?
Yes. Every tour is run as a private group, so it's just you and the people you're traveling with. We go at your pace, stop as long as you like for a good sighting and answer every question along the way.
Let us know how many people are in your party when you book your tour.
Who will be guiding us?
Our tours are led by local guides who are certified naturalists. They know the forests around Bijagua well and can help you spot and understand the birds and animals you see. You can read more about our team and approach on our About Us page.
What time do tours start, and how long do they last?
Start times depend on the tour. Birding tours usually begin in the morning, when birds are most active, and night tours start after dark. We'll confirm your exact start time when you book.
Tour lengths:
- Bijagua Nature Tour: about 3 hours
- Night Nature Tour: about 2 hours
- Tapir Valley Half Day Birdwatching: about 5 hours
- Agami Heron Tour: about 5 hours
- Heliconias Hanging Bridges Tour: a half day
Our team is available every day from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM to help with planning.
Which tours are best for families and beginners?
Two tours were made with families and first-time visitors in mind:
- Bijagua Nature Tour: an easy 3-hour walk to look for toucans, motmots, hummingbirds, sloths and monkeys.
- Night Nature Tour: an easy, family-friendly 2-hour walk near Bijagua to look for sloths, snakes and frogs.
Because every tour is private, your guide can adjust the pace for little legs and curious questions. Compare all options on our Tours page.
Which tours suit experienced birders?
If you're chasing special species, take a look at:
- Heliconias Hanging Bridges Tour: primary forest bridges and a search for Tody Motmot, Yellow-eared Toucanet and Black-eared Wood-Quail.
- Tapir Valley Morning Bird Tour: a specialized morning outing to spot rare and exotic species.
- Agami Heron Tour: a visit to the world's largest Agami Heron rookery, with Caribbean lowland birding on the way.
Beginners are welcome on these tours too.
What are the night tours like?
We offer two night tours:
- Night Nature Tour: an easy, family-friendly 2-hour walk near Bijagua to look for sloths, snakes and frogs.
- Tapir Valley Night Tour: a look at Tapir Valley's nocturnal creatures and its nighttime ecosystem.
The forest feels completely different after dark, and your guide will help you find animals you'd likely never notice on your own.
What should I bring?
We suggest:
- Comfortable closed-toe shoes for walking on trails
- Light layers and a rain jacket, since the forest can be wet
- Water and insect repellent
- Binoculars and a camera, if you have them
If you're unsure what you'll need for a specific tour, just ask us.
Are we guaranteed to see sloths or other wildlife?
These are wild animals in their natural habitat, so we can't promise any particular sighting. What we can promise is a local guide who knows the area well and will do their best to help you find sloths, toucans, monkeys and more.
Where do the tours take place?
Our tours cover Bijagua, Tapir Valley, Rio Celeste and nearby areas, including the Heliconias hanging bridges and the Caribbean lowlands on the Agami Heron Tour. We'll share meeting details when you book.
How do I book?
