Agami Heron Tour
A five-hour trip from Bijagua into the Caribbean lowlands to Agami Island, the world's largest rookery of the rare Agami Heron, birding along the way with a local guide.

The Agami Heron is one of the most beautiful and hard-to-find herons in the Americas. On this five-hour tour we travel from Bijagua deep into the Caribbean lowlands to Agami Island, the world's largest rookery of this rare bird. First discovered in 2025, the island hosts over 1,000 nesting Agami Herons every June through August, and it offers easy, close access to the birds.
Birding the lowlands on the way
The journey is part of the experience. We bird the Caribbean lowlands as we go, and your guide will help you look for species found along the road, such as Snowy Cotinga, Striped Cuckoo, Rufescent Tiger-Heron and Nicaraguan Seedfinch.
Who it suits
This tour is a natural fit for birders and photographers, but you don't need to be an expert to enjoy it. Our tours are led by local guides who are certified naturalists and run as private groups, so we go at your pace and take time to answer your questions. The entry fee to the nature reserve is included.
The nesting season runs from June to August, so plan your visit to Bijagua for those months if you'd like to join us.
