What Makes Bijagua Special?

Amazing Bijagua

Bijagua is a small, quiet farm community in the Cordillera de Guanacaste, the mountain range that runs along the northwest part of the country. Until a few years ago, this area was relatively unknown to tourists but the conservation work being done here is transforming the area into one of the best places in Costa Rica to see wildlife, especially the endangered Baird's Tapir.

For those who love wildlife, Bijagua is the perfect destination. About 500 species of birds have been reported in the area, and it's home to 100 species of reptiles, 65 species of frogs, and 60 species of mammals.

Bijagua lies in the valley between two dormant volcanoes: Miravalles to the west and Tenorio to the east, and it's the geography of the region that makes it a hotbed of biological diversity.

Bijagua lies on the continental divide and is a transitional zone between the dry forest of Guanacaste to the west and the wet, humid Caribbean to the east. In addition, the climate of Bijagua is wetter and milder, making it a conducive habitat for many species of wildlife.

We get many birds that move north and south through the valley during migration, as well as many altitudinal migrants that move up and down the steep sides of the two volcanoes.

Because of the complexity of the climate and geography in the area, it's possible to find dry forest species just a few minutes outside of town to cloud forest species on the slopes of Tenorio to wet Caribbean species at Tapir Valley…all within just a few hours.

If you want to get a real Costa Rica jungle experience with great wildlife encounters, Bijagua is the perfect destination.
